President says he will act as overseer of COVID-19 relief.
On Tuesday, President Trump made the decision to remove Glenn Fine, the acting Defense Department inspector general who was selected to oversee the economic stimulus aid package passed by Congress last month. It is not clear who will be his replacement to carry out oversight moving forward. The bill passed by Congress and signed by the President dolls out over $2 Trillion in aid to Americans and corporations.
This decision drew criticism from Democrat leaders in Congress. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi described the move as attempting to “undermine oversight.” In response, the president stated that “I’ll be the oversight.” President Trump did not indicate the reason for the firing but did cite “reports of bias” among the Defense Department’s inspector generals.
